on the campus of the massachusetts institute of technology, a prestigious university here in the boston area, specifically in cambridge, there was a shooting of a police officer. the officer was killed. there was also a carjacking in cambridge. there was a chase. two individuals have been arrested in watertown, massachusetts. there has been a big police presence, both local law enforcement and the federal bureau of investigation, the fbi which would suggest that this is not your average local crime, even though the shooting of a police officer is taken sle seriously. the fbi would not necessarily be involved in the manhunt for somebody who shot a police officer. the fbi has said, they've acknowledged to cnn, they're trying to figure out if there's any connection whatsoever with what is going on this evening on the campus of m.i.t. and in watertown where the individuals were apprehended and what happened earlier on monday a couple blocks from me. i'm going to go to drew griffin on the scene in watertown where these arrests have taken place. drew, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we just got
activity, on the campus of the massachusetts institute of technology, m.i.t., in cambridge, where one police officer was shot and killed. it wasn't until roughly 2:00 in the morning east coast that -- i'm told now -- i see them. the police station, the mobile station, mobile command center, has moved from here on the crime scene and is now going to whereabouts unknown. we don't know where. but the fact it would be doing so at 2:30 in the morning is an interesting development in what's going on. in any case, to recap at 10:30 this evening there was a shooting on the campus of mrchlgts i.t. in cambridge, a police officer was killed. also a carjacking. one suspect was apprehended in watertown. that person has been apprehended and arrested. we don't know if what's going on in cambridge and watertown is related at all to what took place on monday, but obviously there is a heightened police presence, a heightened law enforcement presence, both boston police and the fbi. i'm going to check in right now with juliette kayyem, if she's fill on the phone. are you still there? >> i am. hi, jake.
called technologies. >> from a volunteer perspective and manhunt perspective, what seems circuit to you having two suspects instead of one? >> a couple things. now they're looking for two, they didn't assume it was only two. they will focus on these two but also go into this saying there could be three or four they just don't know that. this will help in a couple ways. one, suggests there's probably communications between these two. if they can figure out how they were communicating, they can help build that case and localize where they were using cell phones with two people. and does raise the possibility there is a little more capability here. two people can do more things than one and may have gone in different directions now. it complicates things for them and in some ways gives them additional avenues to find these two and build a case against them. >> personally, my initial reaction watching the press conference, two suspects, this must be some ideologically motivated terrorism we understand terrorism crime. the next thing was columbine was two guys and i don't know what those guy
